Before you ask, “What do I need to do first as a new leader?” ask, “How are my intentions landing with others?”

It’s easy to get busy when you step into leadership. But understanding yourself deserves some of that early attention. How do other people experience you? Are your intentions having the impact you intended? What might you be missing?

You can’t answer all of those questions alone. Ask for feedback. Explore your natural tendencies through a personality assessment. Notice your behaviour and the patterns in the responses you get. In my work, I use DiSC to help leaders build that understanding and begin conversations about how they show up with others.

Self-awareness helps you read the situation in front of you and choose your response with intention.

So before you rush into action, slow down long enough to ask: “Who am I as a person, and what am I bringing into my leadership?”

If you’re supporting new managers in your organization, let’s talk about how to help them build that foundation.
